WALKING – Local paths and reserves
1. Unforeseen circumstances including
injury and getting lost
Major injury All guides will have completed in watch training and will have knowledge of local
area, paths and routes used for walking. All guides will hold a first aid certificate
and be over 18.
Duty manager to be informed of intended route and return time. First Aid kit to be
carried. Mobile phone or UHF radio (if range is sufficient) will be carried.

2. Insect bites Minor injury Risk disclosure in safety brief. Use of insect repellent

3. Effect of weather Minor injury Guides to ensure participants have sufficient protection from extremes of weather
including rain and sun. Participants’ footwear should be taken into consideration
when choosing routes.

4. Crossing roads/railways Fatality Instructors to wear high visibility vests and remain vigilant

5. Environmental, fences,
marshland/bogs, animals.
Major injury Always follow paths, do not climb over fences. Bogs and areas with animals
should be avoided.

6. Darkness Fatality Instructors will carry head torches in case of darkness or poor visibility. If it
intended to walk in the dark it is recommended that group members carry torches
also.

7. Ratios Fatality There will always be 2 instructors to act as guides. Accompanying leaders retain
responsibility for their group. With this in mind it is recommended that
accompanying leader ratio to child is 1:10.
